Muscle Energy Technique - (M.E.T)
CPD Approved Course (5 CPD Credits)
Taught by Jane Johnson (Chartered Physiotherapist)
This workshop looks at the muscle energy techniques also called proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). The techniques facilitate a change in the muscle length through manipulation of the proprioceptors of the nervous and muscular systems. We will learn and practice direct manipulation, strain/counterstrain (also called positional release), post-isometric relaxation and reciprocal inhibition. You will learn the theory behind the techniques and practice each one on different areas of the body.
These powerful techniques may be incorporated into a normal massage treatment, and can be very effective for reducing pain, relaxing hypertonic muscles and restoring normal range of movement to a restricted joint. They generally will not cause discomfort to your client.
You
should have an understanding of the major skeletal muscles actions and
we will briefly review how muscles work together by movement of the
agonist by the antagonist supported by synergists. Previous experience
or training in using Soft Tissue Release and Facilitated Stretching
would be helpful. This course is suitable for massage therapists with
some experience or additional training from advanced courses, and also
for sport and remedial massage therapists. If uncertain if this course
is right for you, please contact us for discussion.
